Deforestation is when forests are destroyed by cutting trees (logging) and not replanting them. Sometimes deforestation happens when people change lands into farms, ranches and cities. The most common cause for deforestation is obtaining wood and fuel.

Causes of deforestation in India during the colonial rule:

⏺️Population increased, the demand for food went up.

⏺️British encouraged the production of commercial crops.

⏺️Forest were unproductive.

⏺️The spread of railways from 1850s.

⏺️By the early 19th century, oak forests in England were disappearing. This created a problem of timber supply for the Royal Navy.

⏺️Emergence of Plantations.

The causes for deforestation in India during British rule were: Increase in population, leading to growth in demand for food, and extension of land under cultivation at the expense of forests. Large areas of forests were also cleared to make way for plantation crop
