Dielectric polarization is the term given to describe the behavior of a material when an external electric field is applied on it. A simple picture can be made using a capacitor as an example. The figure below shows an example of a dielectric material in between two conducting parallel plates.

  • The alignment of the dipole moments of the permanent or induced dipoles with the direction of the applied field is called Polarisation.
  • The extent to which a dielectric is polarised is described by a vector quantity. P bar called Polarisation.
  • Polarisation is alos defined as the electric dipole moment per unit volume.
  • The SI unit of P is C/m²
  • Formula: P = (Xe)E where Xe is a constant characteristics of the dielectric and is known as the electric suspectibility of the dielectric medium.
