A disaster is a sudden, calamitous event that seriously disrupts the functioning of a community or society and causes human, material, and economic or environmental losses that exceed the community's or society's ability to cope using its own resources. Though often caused by nature, disasters can have human origins.

By definition ”disaster” means a catastrophe, a mishap, a calamity or grave danger event occurred in an area and affected life and properties. It may be arising from natural or man- made causes, or by accident or due to negligence. ... Dozens of types of disasters happen all over the world at one time or the other.

Disasters are of two types Natural and Human induced disasters, further these disasters are divided in to different types such as Natural disasters are divided in to following types, Geophysical earthquakes, landslides, tsunamis and volcanic activity. Hydrological avalanches & floods.

Types of Disaster:

There are two types of disaster: natural and man-made.

1. Natural Disaster: A disaster caused by natural factors called as a natural disaster e.g., earthquake, flood, cyclone etc.

Earthquake- An earthquake occurs when the earth releases pent-up energy and causes the ground to shake.

Hurricanes, Typhoons & Cyclones- Hurricanes, typhoons, and cyclones refer to the same weather phenomenon, where a really large storm swirls in circles.

Tsunamis- A tsunami consists of huge waves caused by either an underwater earthquake or volcanic eruption. In Japanese, the word means 'harbor wave.'

Floods- A flood is an overflow of water that covers the earth. This overflow can damage buildings and cars in its path. In a severe flood, the water can seep into houses and completely cover them, ruining everything.

Mudslides- Mudslides occur when the ground gets so wet that whatever dirt is on the ground turns into a liquid mass and flows, like a flood, rapidly down a steep slope.

Avalanches- An avalanche (also called a snowslide) is an event that occurs when a cohesive slab of snow lying upon a weaker layer of snow fractures and slides down a Man-made disasters can include hazardous material spills, fires, groundwater contamination, transportation accidents, structure failures, mining accidents, explosions and acts of terrorism. slope.
