Define discriminant. How is it so important in quadratic equation?

Discriminant is the value which determines that wether the roots of the equation are real and distinct, equal, unreal and distinct.

It is the part of the quadratic formula which is underneath the square root.

if it is -ve then it represents roots are nt possible.

if its >0 then it reprents roots are real.


D= b2-4ac

it tells what kind of a root does the equation has

as x= -b+underoot D/2a

so it helps in finding solution
