The dispersed medium in any colloid is the same as the Solvent of any solution ( actually it's not this...but I said this to define it easily) and the dispersed phase is actually the solute in colloid....
For example...in a solution of iodine in alcohol
alcohol is the dispersed medium and iodine is the dispersed phase...

Dispersion medium is the continuous phase of a colloid. It is the phase in which the dispersed phase is distributed. It can be in any state of matter: solid, liquid or gas. It is also called the external phase because the dispersed phase is inside the dispersion medium.
