In Physics, elasticity is the ability of a body to resist a distorting influence and to return to its original size and shape when that influence or force is removed. Solid objects will deform when adequate forces are applied to them. If the material is elastic, the object will return to its initial shape and size when these forces are removed.

The physical reasons for elastic behavior can be quite different for different materials. In metals, the atomic lattice changes size and shape when forces are applied (energy is added to the system). When forces are removed, the lattice goes back to the original lower energy state. For rubbers and other polymers, elasticity is caused by the stretching of polymer chains when forces are applied.

Hey there!

Suppose we are applying a deforming force on an object. Then there is change in its shape or size. and we define elesticity as the tendency of an object to gain its original configuration either shape or size when the deforming force is removed.

While deformation of the body, the deforming force it applied and therefore by Newton's third law we can say that an equal restoring force also acts to retain the body in its original shape. So we define two things for this. i.e Stress and Strain.

We define Stress as the  restoring forces per unit area of the body.

i.e Stress = Restoring force  / Area = F / A

And, We define Strain as the ratio of the change in configuration to the original configuration of the body is called strain,.

i.e Strain = Δconfiguration / orginal configuration

I hope it helps You!
