for the refining of metal by electrolysis:
(a)a thick block of the impure metal is made anode.it is connected to the +ve terminal of the battery.
(b)a thin strip of the impure matal is made cathode.it is connected to the -ve terminal of the battery.
(c)a water soluble salt is taken as electrolyte.
on passing the electric current, impure metal dissolves from the anode and goes into the electrolyte solution and pure metal from the electrolyte deposit on the cathod.the impurities are left behind in the solution, below the anode
Hope this will help you :-)

Metals such as copper, zinc, tin , nickel , silver etc. are refined electro - lyrically. In this process, impure metal is made anode and a thin strip of pure metal is made at cathode. A solution of metal salt is used as the electrolyte.
