ELEMENTS -: The pure substance which is made up of one kind of atoms only is called elements.Nearly there are 118 elements.

Types of elements based on physical state -

(i) Solid elements - The elements which are solid at room temperature. e.g. Gold , sodium etc.

(ii) Liquid elements - The elements which are liquid at room temperature. e.g. mercury , bromine etc.

(iii) Gaseous elements - Only eleven elements exist in gaseous state at room temp. , Hydrogen , oxygen , nitrogen , flourine , chlorine , helium , neon , argon , krypton , xenon and radon.

Types of elements based on characteristics -

(i) Metals

(ii) Non-metals

(iii) Metalloids

COMPOUNDS -: A pure substance containing two or more elements which are combined together in a fixed proportion by mass is called compounds. e.g. H2O . In it , two atom of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen are present in the ration of 2:16 or 1:8 by mass.

Types of compound -

(i) Organic compounds

(ii) Inorganic compounds
