Fold mountains are mountains that form mainly by the effects of folding on layers within the upper part of the Earth's crust. Before either plate tectonic theory developed, or the internal architecture of thrust belts became well understood, the term was used for most mountain belts, such as the Himalayas.
Fold Mountains:
They are the result of lateral compression of the earth's crust.
They are a result of large-scale earth movements cased by stresses in the earth's crust.
These stresses can be because of :
1. Weight of overlying rocks
2. Movement of mantle
3. Expansion or contraction of parts of the earth.
When the earth's crust is compressed laterally, fols and wrinkles appear on the surface.
The raising of these folds or wrinkles makes fold mountains.
