A force is an interaction that causes an affected object to be pushed or pulled in a certain direction.

Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity of an object with respect to time.

FORCE

======

Force is the cause of acceleration, and a measurement of force is a measurement of how much acceleration a given mass will experience when acted on by that force.

Suppose Joe pulls on a 5 kg mass, and it accelerates at 4 m/s^2 toward him. (Starting from rest, its speed at each second is: 0 m/s, 4 m/s, 8 m/s, 12 m/s,…)

If Joe pulls on a 2 kg mass just as hard, it will accelerate at 10 m/s^2.

If Joe pulls on a 10 kg mass just as hard, it will accelerate at 2 m/s^2.

And so on. In each case, the product of mass and acceleration is 20 kg • m/s^2. Since “kilogram meter per second squared” is nine syllables, they named that combination of units a “newton.” So Joe pulls with 20 newtons, or 20 N.
