Define friction :-

Friction is the force resisting the relative motion of solid surfaces, fluid layers, and material elements sliding against each other.

There are several types of friction: Dry friction is a force that opposes the relative lateral motion of two solid surfaces in contact.

In physics :-

Frictional force refers to the force generated by two surfaces that contacts and slide against each other. A few factors affecting the frictional force: These forces are mainly affected by the surface texture and amount of force impelling them together.

Si unit :-

Newton

Like all forces, the unit for friction is the Newton, which is equal to 1 kg.

Directions :-

Friction when an object slides along a surface. Direction is opposite the object's sliding direction and is parallel to the contact surface. Friction that prevents an object from sliding along a surface. Direction stops the object from sliding against another surface and is parallel to the contact surface.

Disadvantages :-

Three disadvantages of friction are :

  • Friction produces heat which damages the moving parts of a machine.

  • Friction produces wear and tear on the contacting surfaces.

  • This reduces the life of machine parts, tyres and shoe soles.

  • A lot of energy is wasted in overcoming the friction before an object starts moving.

Formula :-

F = friction force

U = coefficient of friction

N = normal force
