The energy possess by body due to its position or generally height is called Gravitational potential energy.
Let a body of mass m throw up to height h.
So W= F. d
= mg. h
= mgh.
Hence work done by body = Capacity of body to do this work.
Hence Pe = mgh.

Hy Friend!
"The energy required to bringing any mass. particle from infinity to the earth surface is known as gravitational potential energy"
Its denoted by U and unit is joule...
it is given as U= -GMem/Re
where Me is the mass of earth...
