Green revolution was started in the late 1960s which played a significant​ role in making India self-sufficient in foodgrains.Swaminathan is the main backbone for it. It introduced the Indian farmers to use High yielding varieties of seeds(HYVs) to increase the production of foodgrains on a single plant in the same piece of land that earlier produced.HYVs promised to produce high levels of foodgrains.
