Sulphur dioxide gas can be oxidised to sulphur.

Explanation:

  • Sulphur dioxide is a gas. It has a rotten egg smell. The gas is very toxic for inhalation Oxidation is the gain of oxygen or loss of hydrogen or electrons.
  • \bold{\mathrm{SO}_{2}} can be reduced to sulphur by strong oxidising agent like potassium permanganate. In this reaction hydrogen is liberated and suphur in elemental form is released.
  • Sulphur can further be oxidised to sulphur dioxide or sulphur trioxide. The oxidation number of sulphur in \bold{\mathrm{SO}_{2}} is -2 and in sulphur it is 0.
