Homologous series

In organic chemistry, a homologous series is a series of compounds with the same general formula, usually varying by a single parameter. This can be the length of a carbon chain,for example in the straight-chained alkanes (paraffins), or it could be the number of monomers in a homopolymer such as amylose.

For Example;

The homologous series of straight-chained alkanes begins methane (CH4), ethane (C2H6), propane (C3H8), butane (C4H10), and pentane(C5H12).

Hello! dear,

Your answer goes like this ..

1.Homologous series is a series of organic compounds where successive members follow a regular pattern.

2.The successive members differ by a CH2 group.

For example:-

CH4 - Methane.
C2H6 - Ethane.
C3H8 - Propane.
C4H10 - Butane.

They all will differ from CH2 group and they belongs to alkane family and they are also successive carbon compounds.

Their Homologous series of carbon compounds Will differ from 14 amu because molar mass of CH2 is 14.

Thank you dear,

Hope It helps you dear.
