Oxidation and reduction is process of  adding oxygen to form an oxide (oxidation) or removing oxygen (reduction). They occur together only.

For example, in the burning of hydrogen

2H2 + O2 -> 2H2O

the hydrogen is oxidized and the oxygen is reduced.
