An index (plural: indices) is the power, or exponent, of a number. For example, a3 has an index of 3. A surd is an irrational number that can be expressed with roots, such as √2 or 5√19.

indices

The index of a number says how many times to use the number in a multiplication. It is written as a small number to the right and above the base number. In this example: 82 = 8 × 8 = 64. The plural of index is indices

surds

Surds are numbers left in 'square root form' (or 'cube root form' etc). They are therefore irrational numbers. The reason we leave them as surds is because in decimal form they would go on forever and so this is a very clumsy way of writing them
