An index (plural: indices) is the power, or exponent, of a number. For example, a3 has an index of 3. A surd is an irrational number that can be expressed with roots, such as √2 or 5√19.

The index of a number says how many times to use the number in a multiplication. It is written as a small number to the right and above the base number. In this example: 82 = 8 × 8 = 64. The plural of index is indices
