Irrigation is the process through which controlled amount of water can be supplied through artificial means such as pipes, ditches, sprinklers etc. the main objectives of irrigation systems is to help agricultural crop growth, landscape maintenance, reduce the effect of inadequate rainfall etc
♣️ Define Irrigation.
Ans- The process in which water is supplied to the crop at different intervals is known as Irrigation. It is very important for crops because they need adequate water for the process of Photosynthesis. Irrigation varies from crop to crop, season to season and soil to soil. In India the Irrigation is done through sources like well, river, canals etc.
♣️ Discuss its importances.
Ans- The Irrigation is a very important process in the steps followed in the production of crops. The following are the advantages of Irrigation:-
- As we know that water contains two of the most essential and macro elements like Hydrogen and Oxygen. By Irrigation, the crops get these important elements.
- The seed requires moisture in the soil for its germination. So, it is also important for its growth.
- After the seed grows into a small plant, the plant need water for the growth of its root. The growth of root occurs with the availability of water in soil.
- Many minerals found in the soil are soluble in water, thus they can be absorbed by the roots. Thus, water made available to field helps in the absorption of nutrients in soil.
♣️Various ways of supplying water.
Ans- The water is supplied to the field in many ways i.e. there are many forms of irrigation like:-
- Canal system - The water in canals are divided into different branches and channels to cover maximum area for irrigation.
- Ponds, lakes, rivers etc. sources
- Wells - The water from wells are supplied in two ways that are dug wells and tube wells. Dug wells arr wells that are made for collecting groundwater and tube wells are pumped using diesel and electricity.
- Sprinkler system - The water is spreaded everywhere in the field from perpendicular pipes with nozzles which sprinkles water all around that seems like raining. This is helpful for sandy and uneven soil
- Drip system - This uses pipes fitted to the roots known as emitters which releases water drop by drop to the roots directly. In this system, water is not wasted at all.
