Law of definite proportion simply means elements combine in simple ratio by mass to form molecules .

valiant07: Law of definite proportion does not hold good for Isotopes .
The isotopic composing of the compound may change from place to place and hence it's contribution to mass will also change. ( isotopes have the same chemical properties but different atomic masses)

Take the case of hydrogen chloride (HCl). We are taking Cl-35 .The ration by mass of H and Cl is 1 : 35 . but if we take Cl-37 then ration of masses will change .
