Answer:

Ionic bonds are formed by the transfer of electrons from a metal to non metal .In short this bonds are formed with bonding of elements with opposite charges

In Sodium chloride

Sodium: Atomic number 11

Electronic configuration 2,8,1

Valence electrons 1

Chlorine: Atomic number 17

Electronic configuration 2,8,7

Valence electrons 7

Now it would be quite easy for Sodium to donate 1 electron rather than gaining 7 electrons to complete it's octet state so these two elements will share their electrons with each other to complete their octet shell and when they combine they may form an ionic bond and hence this ionic bond would be referred as ionic compound

Explanation:

Sodium + Chlorine = Sodium Chloride

Hope it helps you dear
