The ground substance inside any cell is called cytoplasm. The fluid part of cytoplasm is called cytosol .The cytoplasm has various organelles floating on it called cell organelles.Lysosome is one such cell organelle. It is mainly found in animal cells and some lower group of plants.Lysosomes are synthesized in Golgi Apparatus ,another cell organelles organelle.Lysosomes destroy old worn out cell organelles by engulfing and digesting them by releasing digestive or hydrolytic enzymes, also called lysosomal enzymes. For this reason Lysosomes are called digestive bags of cell. But lysosomal enzymes can bring about the breakdown of several cytoplasmic structures. So Lysosomes are celled suicidal bags of cell.

Hope this answer helped.

Rodrier: Sorry another point I missed.........Lysosomes have a single membrane and form a part of endomembrane system in a cell.
