A physical substance, which has mass and occupies space is called matter.
Matter is classified into 3 types on the basis of its molecular arrangement.
The forms of matter are:
Solid: Solids have definite mass, shape, and volume. This is because their molecules are tightly packed and cannot be moved, but they vibrate around in their mean positions.
Liquid: Liquids have definite mass and volume, but not a definite shape. Their molecules are looser than those of solid's, thus they can move around and make the liquid 'flow'. The liquid takes the shape of its container.
Gasses: Gases have indefinite mass, volume, and shape. This is because the molecules of gasses are scattered freely and have a lot of space in between, allowing them to move freely, thus taking up any space which is left around. Gasses can also be packed in containers, which proves they have mass and volume.
