Growth in the plants is largely restricted to specialised regions of active cell division that are known to be meristem. A Meristematic tissue is a group of immature cells that are always in state of division.
Their characteristics are
1)It is a group of undifferentiated or immature cells .
2) The cells are small sized and generally isodiametric or polygonal in shape.
3) The cell wall is thin and flexible. It is made up of only primary cell wall( cellulose).
4)They don't have intercellular spaces. All cells are compactly arranged.
5) Vacuoles are mostly absent and if present then they are of small size.
6)They have prominent and large nucleus.
7) They have dense protoplasm
8) Chloroplast and mitochondria are present in the form of protoplastid.
