mitochondria are well defined cell organelle these have their own DNA . these produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP) thus provides energy to the body cells. so it is also called powerhouse of the cell..
function _ 1.Mitochondria produce ATP through process of cellular respiration—specifically, aerobic respiration, which requires oxygen.
2. Mitochondria help the cells to maintain proper concentration of calcium ions within the compartments of the cell.
3. They also regulate the cell’s metabolism.

Mitochondria ( singular mitochondria ) are important double membrane bound organelles found in all eukaryotic cells . These are generally sausage shaped but shape and size of mitochondria varies with type of cell . They are found more in number in active cells
the space found between the two outer covering is called outer compartment the outer membrane is smooth the inner membrane surrounds the central chamber filled with a matrix many inward folds or finger like projections of inner membrane are embedded in matrix these folds are called Cristae the Cristae increase the surface area of the inner membrane the inner membrane has several tennis ball like particles attached to it these are called F particle of oxysomes the matrix of mitochondria is filled with respiratory enzymes Matrix has DNA and ribosomes also
FUNCTION
Mitochondria are mainly responsible for aerobic respiration and ATP generation. ATP is known as energy currency of the cell. Because energy is produced in mitochondria these are regarded as power house of the cell
Due to the presence of DNA and ribosome mitochondria are able to replicate themselves therefore they are called semi - autonomous organelle
