Explanation:
Minerals are substances that are formed naturally in the Earth. Minerals are usually solid, inorganic, have a crystal structure, and form naturally by geological processes. The study of minerals is called mineralogy. A mineral can be made of single chemical element or more usually a compound.
Answer:
Minerals and sources of energy are valuable resources. They form a part of natural environment.
Minerals are naturally occurring chemical compounds. All rocks are composed of one or more minerals . Rock do not have a definite chemical composition whereas mineral have a definite chemical composition. We get metals and chemicals from the minerals in the rock.Minerals include all organic and inorganic materials that are extract from the Earth bye mining. A rock which has a large concentration of a particular mineral is called the ore of the mineral. Through minerals occur widely in rocks, they are extracted only at places where their concentration is high. Minerals are formed by natural processes without any interference from humans. They are non living solid substances which are concentrated in a particular area.
A Mineral ore may or may not be commercially useful . The process of separating minerals from their ores by heating beyond melting point is known as smelting.
Minerals have the following characteristics:-
● They are unevenly distributed over the earth's surface.
● They are mixed up with a large variety of impurities.
● The mineral resources are exhaustible.
The mineral resources of the earth have been exploited and used since pre-historic times. In the history of human civilization , minerals have played a very crucial role. Various stage of development in human Civilization have even been named after the minerals which prevailed at the time, such as;
● The Stone Age marked the time when humans made weapons and implements from stones.
● Copper is believed to be the first metal that humans learnt to use . With the use of copper big in the Copper Age.
● Humans developed a stronger and more durable metal by mixing copper and tin. Thus began the Bronze Age.
● Almost 3,000 year ago, the Bronze Age was replaced by the Iron Age when the implements and weapons began to be made of sturdy iron.
● The modern era brought in the Steel Age when most of the tools , implements and weapons where made of steel.
In this way , we can see how great progress has been made in the discovery of various metals . During the last 200 years, this progress has been astounding and humans has learnt to discover, extract and utilize many more metals.
