Mitochondria is the power house of the cell. It is a semi-autonomous organelle which has its own circular DNA and ribosomal machinery. It is a double membranous organelle. The space between the two membranes is called peri-mitochondrial space. The inner membrane is folded into many cristae. The inner membrane is embedded with electron transport system. The space inside to the inner membrane is filled with matrix.

Mitochondria generates ATP which is the energy currency of the cell with the help of electron transport system. That's why mitochondria is known as power house of the cell.
