Neutron is a neutral charged sub-atomic particle present in the nucleus of an atom. If a nucleus had only protons (+vely charged sub-atomic particles) it would be highly unstable as the similar charges would repel each other. To pack the protons in nucleus, neutral charged sub-atomic particles are located between protons, thus overcoming the repulsion and stabilising the atom.

Neutrons were discovered by James Chadwick.
