The normal lapse is defined as the highly variable being infected by condensation,radiation,convection..Its average is 6.5°C/km in the troposphere.

The lapse rate is considered positive when the temperature decreases with elevation,zero when the temperature is constant with elevation, and negativewhen the temperature increases with elevation (temperature inversion).
