Definition of Parallax:

  • In simple words , parallax is a phenomenon in which the position of an object varies when viewed from different line of sight.

  • Let's take a easy example :

  • When we try measure the distance of a point from another point with a scale, if we view that point from vertically upwards we get a specific reading on the scale. But if our viewing angle is different the the reading on the scale changes.

  • Another example : Refer to diagram. The value of the level of fluid on the demarcated test tube differs when viewed from different angles.

Angular Method to determine diameter of planets:

  • Refer to 2nd photo

  • Let diameter of planet be "d" and distance of planet from earth be D.

  • Let the angle subtended be \delta.

 \therefore \:  \tan(  \delta) =  \dfrac{d}{D}

For very small angles:

 \implies \:   \delta=  \dfrac{d}{D}

   \boxed{\implies \:   d = D \times  \delta}

Hope It Helps.
