Answer:

PEARL CULTURE - DEFINITION

To meet the commercial demand, pearls are cultivated with the help of human intervention. This practice is known as pearl culture.

Pearl culture involves a mantle graft implementation technique, using which a grain of sand is inserted between the mantle and shell of an oysters body at the right time.

Gradually, the grain develops as a pearl which takes about three to six years to reach to its full size.

In this way, large pearls can be obtained at a commercial scale.

These pearls are known as cultured or artificial pearls.
