Photochemical ( Meaning of photo is light ) reaction is a reaction that proceeds with the presence of light energy . It is a chemical reaction and hence it results in the formation of new products. The photo chemical reaction may take place by the absorption of light energy or photons ( the particles of light ) . The photo chemical reaction generally results in the presence of excess energy or absorption of energy .

Example of a photochemical reaction is photosynthesis . During this process , the photons are absorbed for the activation of chloride ions and then the plant takes in carbon dioxide and water . This results in formation of plant food and is essential for the existence of life on Earth .
