The Indian Rebellion of 1857 had diverse political, economic, military, religious and social causes. ... The spark that led to a mutiny in several sepoy companies was the issue of new gunpowder cartridges for the Enfield rifle in February, 1857. A rumour was spread that the cartridges were made from cow and pig fat.

The revolt of 1857 was the result of military discontent and mass rebellion that emerged against the British takeover in northern and central India.

Political Causes of revolt of 1857:-

• The last expansion of British territory in India took place during the reign of Dalhousie.

• Dalhousie announced in 1849 that the successors of Bahadur Shah II would have to leave the Red Fort.

• The annexation of Baghat and Udaipur was canceled in any way and they remained under their ruling houses.

• When Dalhousie tried to apply the principle of lapse on Karauli (Rajasthan), his decision was nullified by the Court of Directors.

• Between the occupation of the Dalhousie of the Sambalpur, Nagpur, Jhansi and the banning on payment of allowances to the ruling houses in Karnataka, Awadh was not even on the contention of Kupratha.

  • Unethical but also shocking to the Indian conscience because they disregarded the British selfishness and immortal Hindu customs.
