A group of atom having a charge is called polyatomic ion. for example carbonate ion is a polyatomic ion which is made up of two type of atoms join together, and has two unit of negative charge hence it is a polyatomic ion. Polyatomic ions are also known as compound ion.
Polyatomic ions can either have positive or negative charge, And are called polyatomic cation or polyatomic anions respectively
Examples
Ammonium ion ( NH+4)
Phosphonium ion (PH +4)
Sulphate ion (SO4 -2)
Nitrate ion ( NO3 -1)
Phosphate ion (PO4 -3)
Cupperous ion (Cu +1)
Cupperic ion (Cu +2)
Magnesium (Mg +2) and so on.....
