The capitals of Bombay, Bengal and madras. Presidencies in British India were called as presidency cities

It’s features were as follows

The pace of urbanisation was slow under colonial rule . By early 20th century only about 11%of Indians were living in cities.

Presidency cities were multifunctional cities . It is so because they had :

- major ports .

- warehouses

-homes and offices

- army camps

- educational institutions

-museums and libraries

Bombay was the premier city of India

Bombay expanded rapidly in the late 19th century . It’s population going up from 644,405 in 1872 to nearly 1,500,000 in 1942
