RESONANCE

  • It is a special case of forced vibrations when the natural frequency of the vibrating body is exactly equal to the frequency of the external periodic force applied on the body.
  • A loud sound is heard when resonance occurs.
  • The bodies which possess such vibrations are called resonating bodies.

Resonance :-

A phenomenon in which an external force or a vibrating system forces another system around it to vibrate with greater amplitude at a specified frequency of operation.

Let us also learn about Frequency and Time Period

  1. Frequency - The number of cycles which it completes in one second is called Frequency of oscillation.
  2. Time Period - The amount of time it takes to complete one cycle is called Time Period.

NOW,

When does Resonance occurs?

Resonance occurs when a material oscillates at a high amplitude at a specific particular frequency.

This frequency is termed as resonant frequency.

How to calculate Resonant frequency?

To find the resonant frequency of a single continuous wave, we use the formula -

v =  λ f

Where,

  • v is the wave velocity,
  • λ is the distance of wavelength.

Types of Resonance :-

The most common types of Resonance are as follows :-

1.) MECHANICAL RESONANCE - It is defined as the tendency of a mechanical system to respond at a greater amplitude when the frequency of the vibrating body matches with the frequency of its oscillations.

2.) ACOUSTIC RESONANCE - It is the phenomenon in which an acoustic system amolifies sound waves whose frequency matches with one of its own natural frequencies of vibration.

3.) ELECTRICAL RESONANCE - In the circuit when the inductive reactance and the capacitive rectance are equal in magnitude, electrical resonance occurs.

We can see Resonance in Musical Instruments, Swing ,Bridge, etc.
