Queston :

Define roasting and calcination?

Answer:

Roasting :

The process by which sulphide ors are converted into the oxides. The heating of them strongly in presence of excess air or oxygen is called as Roasting.

An example of roasting :  when Zinc sulphide is converted into zinc oxide.

2ZnS + 3O₂ —> 2ZnO + CO₂

Calcination :

Calcination is a process in which ore is heated in the absence of air. As a result of calcination carbonate ore is converted into its oxide.

An example for Calcination : Calcium carbonate converted into calcium oxide by calcination.

CaCo —> CaO + CO₂
