Roasting is process in which ore is heated in the presence of oxygen .

Sulphide ores are converted into oxides by roasting process .  

For example :

ZnS + 3 O₂   =  >  2 ZnO   + 2 SO₂

Calcination :  

It is process in which ores are heated in absence of oxygen .

Carbonate ores converted into oxides .  

For example :  

ZnCO₃   =  >  ZnO  +   CO₂
