It is a coarse fibrous and indigestible part of food. They are present mostly in fruits and vegetables. Their main function is to ensure bowel regularity. They are very necessary in our diet and constitute a main part of our digestive system.

Some parts of food cannot be digested, they are called dietary fibre which is also known as roughage. Roughage are important to us although they do not provide us any nutrients because they benefit us more by balancing our blood pressure and maintaining the proper weight. They also prevent our body from getting constipation. This is why it is important to add roughage or dietary fibre to our regular diet by adding some vegetables like beans and sprouts and legumes to your diet. Hope this helps!!
