The transistor was invented at Bell Labs in 1947 but did not see widespread use in computers until the late 1950s.
The transistor was far superior to the vacuum tube, allowing computers to become smaller, faster, cheaper, more energy-efficient and more reliable than their first-generation predecessors.

Second generation of computer.

Ans:- transistor replaced vacuum tube and ushered in the second generation of computer. one transistor replaced the equivalent of 40 vacuum tubes. Alloying computer to become smaller faster , cheaper more energy efficient and more reliable. still generated great deal of heat

that can damage the computer. (second generation in 1957 to 1964)

Second generation computer moved from cryptic binary machine language to symbol or assembly language which Allowed programmes to specific instruction in word. Second generation computer still replied on punch card for input and printouts for output.

These were also the first computers their memory which moved from a magnetic drum to magnetic core technology.

Example:- UNIVAC iii , RCA 501, Philco Transact s-2000 , NCR 300 series , IBM 7030 stretch . etc
