Self incompatibility is the genetic mechanism in which Pollen from a flower is not able to fertilize stigma of the same flower or different flower of the same plant.
In self incompatibility when Pollen is deposited on the stigma it fails to produce Pollen tube and thus failing to complete the process of fertilization.
This failing of self fertilization in angiosperms encourages cross pollination and allogamy.
There can be two types of self incompatibility :
● Sporophytic Self Incompatibility
● Gametophytic Self Incompatibility
