Solid, one of the three basic states of matter, the others being liquid and gas. (Sometimes plasmas, or ionized gases, are considered a fourth state of matter.) A solid forms from liquid or gas because the energy of atoms decreases when the atoms take up a relatively ordered, three-dimensional structure.

Solid state of matter :

1) On the basis of volume and shape -

=> Solid have a definite shape and volume. We can compress it or change it's shape by applying very little force.

2) On the basis of arrangement of partials -

=>The molecules in solids are very tightly packed and are so rigid.

3) On the basis of kinetic energy ( movement) -

=> In case of solids the kinetic energy of the molecules are very low that they can not move apart from each other.

4) On the basis of capacity ( fills container or not).

=> If we put any solid substance in any container, it will not completely fill the volume of that container as the particles of solid are very tightly packed.

5) Force of attraction -

=> Force of attraction is very high in solids that's why the molecules in solid does not get apart from each other.

6) Diffusion -

=> Diffusion is very much low in case of solids. Even the partials of any particular thing can take several years to diffuse completely in solids.
