What is scalar and vector ?

Scalar quantity is that which has only magnitude .

While ,

Vector quantity is that which has both magnitude and direction.

Sometimes distance and displacement are equal when an object is travelling in straight line jn same direction.

NOW COME TO YOUR QUESTION

✍✍✍✍✍✍✍✍✍

SPEED -

It is defined as the distance per unit time .

It is a scalar quantity.

Its unit is m/s

It can not be negative

VELOCITY -

It is defined as the displacement per unit time .

Its unit is m/s

It can be zero and negative .

NOW SEE ,

HERE VELOCITY IS NEGATIVE

see ATTACHMENT

A body moves 20 m in south in relation to north displacement =-20 m. Let the object take 1 sec to cover the distance So velocity is also -20 m/s .

So velocity can be negative but not speed .
