Stem structure:-

  • The stem divides into nodes and internodes. The nodes give rise to the leaves and hold the buds which grow into branches. The internodes separate two nodes.

Internally , it contains three basic types of tissues:

  • Dermal tissue
  • Ground Tissue
  • Vascular tissue

[All of which are made of simple cells.]

Functions:-

Produce leaves, branches and flowers.

Hold leaves up to the sun.

Transport substances between roots and leaves.

Primary Growth: cell division in apical meristem.

Secondary Growth: growth in lateral meristems in conifers and dicots.
