It is a large area of land usually in dry regions where the top layer of the soil or the sand particles has blown away by the wind or flown away by water thus revealing the underneath layer which are covered with boulders.

These boulders over a long period of time turns into stones and pebbles due to various natural factors.

Such area of land which is covered with stones, pebbles and boulders is known as Stony waste.
