Temperature can be defined as the measure of the intensity of heat possessed by a body or a place.

Following are the four important factors that control the temperature of a place:

  • The amount of insolation received by a place plays the most important role in the temperature of the place.
  • Higher the latitude, lower is the insolation received.
  • The altitude of a place determines the temperature of the place.
  • Higher the altitude, lower is the temperature. This phenomena is called ‘temperature inversion’.
  • The physiography of a place is another important factor that determines the temperature of the place.
  • The temperatures are high in hot deserts and they are low in cold deserts.
  • The type and extent of vegetation in a given area plays the role of the moderator of temperature in that area.
