The sepoys broke out into an open revolt in Meerut in April 1857. They refused to touch the greased cartridges The sepoys marched to Delhi on may 11 and took over the control under Bahadur Shah ZafarII. The revolt then spread to other places. it was led by Nana Saheb in Kanpur. ,Begum Hazrat Mahal in awadh, Rani Laxmi Bai in Jhansi led the revolt in central India and fought valiantly....

by the mid eighteen century , nawabs and rajas had lost thier power. instead , british residents had been stationed  in courts , with the freedomof the rulers reduced , thier armed forces disbanded and  their revenues and territories forcibly taken away.

many rulers tried to negotiate with the company to protect thier interests.Rani lakshmibai of jhansi wanted the company to recognize her adopted son as the hier to the kingdom.nana sahib, the adopted son of peshwa baji rao 2, pleaded that  he be given his father's pension when the latter died . however , all these pleas were turned down by the company. the company then annexed awadh.
