Define the following:

i.) Atomic number:

➛ Atomic number is the number of protons present in the nucleus of an atom. It is donated by letter Z.

Assimilate:

  • An atom of an element has its own characteristics number of protons in its nucleus which distinguish it from the atoms of the other elements.
  • Atomic number is unique for atoms of each element.
  • The atomic number of an element is the number of:
  1. electrons present in its neutral atom.
  2. protons present in the nucleus of its atom.
  3. positive charge in the nucleus of its atom.

ii.) Quantum number:

Quantum number is a set of numbers that is used to describe the position of an electron or the energy of an electron in an atom of an element.

Four quantum numbers are:

  1. Principal quantum number.
  2. Magnetic quantum number.
  3. Angular momentum quantum number
  4. Spin quantum number

iii.) Orbit:

The electrons revolving around the nucleus are confirmed to a certain fix shells or energy levels called orbits, each of which is associated with a fixed amount of energy.

  • While electrons revolve around the nucleus in their own orbit, an electron neither gains nor loses energy.
