Retardation can be defined as the decreases in velocity of a body in per unit time.

Exapmle :

If you are traveling at a speed of 2 km h^-1 and as sudden you allowed brake and stopped the vehicle. Here in this case velocity is decreased from 2 km h ^-1 to 0, in per unit time.
