There are three types of properties of matter:
- Physical properties
- Chemical properties
- Intensive and extensive properties
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Physical properties enable one to distinguish one piece of matter from another, which can also be measured. It is independent of the chemical composition.
Eg. Density, mass, length, breadth, height, volume, colour, temperature, malleability, etc.
CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
Chemical properties are properties or characteristics of matter that are measurable only when one type matter transforms into another type.
Eg. Reactivity with other chemicals (of all types), coordination number, enthalpy of formation, oxidation states, reduction states, acidity, heat of combustion, reactivity, toxicity, etc
INTENSIVE AND EXTENSIVE PROPERTIES
Intensive properties of matter – The matter's physical property which is independent of its physical characteristics (size or volume of material) or amount of matter present. It is also known as bulk property.
Eg. temperature, refractive index, density, hardness, etc.
Extensive property of matter – The matter's physical property which is dependent on its physical characteristics or amount of matter present. The volume of the matter defines its extensive properties.
Eg. enthalpy, entropy, Gibbs energy, heat capacity, helmholtz energy, internal energy, etc.
