Answer:

As both protons and neutrons are present in the nucleus of an atom, they are together called nucleons. For example, an atom of carbon has 6 protons and 6 neutrons. Thus, its mass number is 12. While the number of protons remains the same in all atoms of an element, the number of neutrons can vary.

ATOMIC MASS:

The atomic mass of a single atom is simply it's total mass and is expressed in atomic mass units or amu. By definition,an atom of carbon with 6 neutrons, carbon-12, Hasan atomic mass of 12 amu.

ATOMIC NUMBER:

The number of protons in an atom is called an atomic number.

Eg: Oxygen atom contains 8 protons and have an atomic number 8.

MASS NUMBER:

The number of protons and number of neutrons determine an elements mass number.

mass number=protons+neutrons.

Eg: carbon's mass number is 12 as it have 6 protons and 6 neutrons
